Music Writer Wanted

The Daily Discharge is looking for a funky, happening and eloquent female music journo to add a new dimension to our music and opinion articles. Do you go to lots of gigs? Know people in bands? Do you find yourself backstage, or somewhere between the stage and the outstretched hands of a sweaty crowd on a regular basis?

You may be the girl we’re looking for.

As our new music journo, you should be:

  • Interesting, good looking, funny and vibey – like the rest of us (see About page for details)
  • Willing to write for the love of the scene and the artists you enjoy, and not for fame, fortune or free shit
  • Able to attend gigs often, preferably with a camera (or at least be able to source photos from the events)
  • Semi-reliable (enjoy yourself, but not get overly-hammered and lose your shit, forgetting who played)
  • Able to write descriptively and clearly (your articles will be proofed, so don’t worry about spelling, etc)
  • Computer literate (WordPress experience would be great, but we’re not that picky)

Also, as our new music journo you should not be

  • A Claremont ditz
  • A Camps Bay ditz
  • Opposed to the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, or the wearing of skinny jeans, guyliner and/or plaid.
  • A fan of ironic Indie or 80s fashion (that just won’t do)
  • Lame, prudish stoopid or boring

The Deal

Before you ask, the job doesn’t pay.  If you’re looking to make a paying career out of music journalism in Cape Town, we suggest you wake yourself up from your slumber at the kitchen table, put your coffee in the microwave, and go out and get a real job.

What we’re offering you is a slice of freedom to write what you like without deadlines or restrictions or word counts, and to see your work published online where people will actually read it. We won’t ask you for articles, or expect that you give up your social plans to attend some gig you don’t want to go to.

All we ask is that you go where you normally go, watch the bands you like or go jam to the DJs you enjoy – but take photos and write a few hundred words about it the next day.  If that sounds like something you feel like doing during your free weekend time:

Email Jason Dude – send us a sample of your work or direct us to where we can see it (photos not necessary)
