| Other Info | It all started just before the turn of the last millennium when Ernie P, die hard punker and stalwart of the scene, had a vision – to unite the scene to create an entertaining show for everyone and at the same time manage to take the piss out of the pop music industry… His vision was the DEATH OF POP! The idea behind DEATH OF POP was that a whole group of underground bands would do a set playing covers of pop songs in their own particular music style, the idea was great, but no one would have imagined the impact that it would actually have on the Cape Town scene. The first DEATH OF POP show was held on a Sunday evening at a place called the Planet in Observatory. There were probably less than 50 people who turned out at that first show, but the atmosphere and the vibe that was created that night set the ball rolling for what would eventually become the biggest and most popular underground show in the Mother City at that time. It was initially meant to be a one off show, but word started spreading like wildfire and it resulted a succession of DEATH OF POPS with the last one being held in March 2002. DEATH OF POP became a focal point of the scene uniting bands and audiences that didn’t really have much in common with each other apart from their dislike for the corporate music industry generated garbage that they have all been force-fed through every buyable medium their whole lives. The DEATH OF POP introduced a lot of new bands to the scene including, amongst others, thee notorious drunk punks, Half Price. The comraderie and unity with that took place with all who were fortunate enough to share the DEATH OF POP experience played a fundamental part in building the scene into what it is today. Flying Rat, Hogmosh and DumpandSpank productions have teamed up together once again and decided to bring back Ernie P’s vision and put together DEATH OF POP 2009 or DEATH OF POP XI. In keeping with true DEATH OF POP style there will be a ridiculous amount of bands on the bill all playing 20 minute sets and the line up consists of a range of different bands from the well established to the up and coming all coming together to recreate the legendary experience that is DEATH OF POP. This year to pay tribute to arguably the greatest pop musician ever, each band will be performing a minimum of one Michael Jackson song. These are the confirmed acts, watch this space for more to be added soon: A B Turbo Enmity Eye Karumba Half price Heart Shaped Heresy Hog Hoggidy Hog Michael Jackson is Dead Skollie Patrollie three chord theory Three More White Guys The Sleepers Throatball V.O.L Yes Sir Mister Machine We will also be doing a limited run of DOP 2009 tshirts, so check back here to see the design and order a couple for your Grandparents.
